My introduction to Christian Science came when I began attending...

My introduction to Christian Science came when I began attending the Sunday School at the age of eighteen. A consecrated Sunday School teacher was successful in catching my interest, and from that time, about fifty years ago, my greatest desire has been to increase my knowledge of God as taught in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Outstanding among the many healings I have experienced are two dealing with the overcoming of fear. I would like to share these experiences in the hope that they may aid others.

A number of years ago, when my son was about four years old, our city was experiencing a polio epidemic. The papers were full of depressing statistics, and many mothers were very concerned for the fate of their little ones. One night I was awakened by crying from our child's room and on investigation found him complaining of pains in his legs. Thinking he was probably cold, I covered him warmly, soothed him till he fell asleep, and returned to my bed. About an hour later he wakened me again, crying even harder, apparently in great pain. Then I realized that this was no ordinary disturbance.

As I stood there, the thought of polio crossed my mind, and I experienced for the first time in my life the fear that paralyzes. I seemed glued to the spot. For a moment my mind refused to function. Then I realized that I could do nothing for my little boy until I got myself in hand. I made him as comfortable as possible, then went into the living room, picking up my Bible on the way. I opened to I John 4:18 which reads, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear." I was trembling so hard that I could barely make out the words, but I said them over and over, until their meaning began to permeate my consciousness.
