Intelligent Reading

Words are important. Words of profound meaning can be so familiar to us that they become almost superficial, unheeded sounds. Mary Baker Eddy selected words with great care as she endeavored to convey a Science before unexplained and immense in scope. Her use of language in explaining the unique subject of Christian Science is direct and clear. Every word is needed to give the full substance of an idea being stated. Often she uses words not previously related to theology.

It is an important literary experience to become familiar with the magnificent language Mrs. Eddy uses, but it is a far deeper experience to comprehend spiritually what she is revealing.

Without distorting the meaning of words familiar and unfamiliar, Mrs. Eddy deepens their impact by applying them metaphysically in fresh and inspiring aspects. Her writings show the integrity and thoroughness of her search for exact terms, knowing as she did the tremendous importance of what she had discovered—the very laws of Spirit that Christ Jesus had demonstrated in his mission as Saviour of the world.
