Signs of the Times
Bishop Everett W. Palmer
The Methodist Church, Seattle
in The Seattle Times
Seattle, Washington
In the Bible, angels are symbols much as in America Uncle Sam is a symbol. They represent an awesome fact; namely, dimensions of experience and meaning too great for easy definition or description; indeed, too vast for the reach of our minds and the range of our language.
They symbolize a conviction about the nature of the universe and its Creator: a conviction that Spirit, not matter, is fundamental in the nature of things; that at the heart of the universe is concern which answers in compassion to the needs of men; that the grandeur of Heaven is closer to the drab hillsides of our daily life than we often think.
