There Is No Penalty

One of the most liberating statements of the Bible has come to us from Paul in his letter to the Romans. He says, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." ^{Rom. 8:2;}

In various ways the human mind has consented to theories of disease, including penalties in the form of incapacity, loss, limitation, and finally death. In his healing ministry Jesus challenged such laws and showed men the way to counteract the penalties. He showed that sin and disease have no basis in the nature and character of God as the one primal cause and that they can have no effect in man as God's expression or likeness. Christian Science has come as the scientific manifestation of "the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus," and it has come to liberate, to comfort, to heal, and to restore.

This Science teaches that matter is not the primal substance of life. In fact, it teaches that there is no life or intelligence in matter. It explains that matter is a product of thought and that all the so-called laws of matter are an extension of mortal thought, or what is called mortal mind. Sin and disease are not an inherent part of man's nature but are educated beliefs, aggressive suggestions, inhering in the general belief in a creative power opposite to God that results in a mortal universe and a mortal man. It is essential to understand that God, Spirit, is the only intelligence, the only lawgiver. He is infinite good in which is no evil or anything that can cause evil. Matter and evil are seen to be part of a misconception of being, and on this basis they are challenged as illegitimate and powerless.
