The insights of the prophets of ancient Israel are a never ceasing source of amazement to moderns. While they dealt with the issues of their times, they dealt with them on a timeless basis. The prophets refused to be intimidated by wealth and power and influence and in so doing proclaimed their independence of their contemporaries and their identification with the total of humanity, past and present. The basis of their boldness and their timeliness and timelessness was their sense of the word of God as it came to them and was proclaimed by them.
The prophetic concept of justice is conspicuous in the prophetic ministry. The high sense of right reflects an ethical code which the passing centuries and the advancement of knowledge have not improved upon. The moral standards the prophets insisted upon originate...in penetrating insight into the nature of personality and the requirements of humanity for survival...
