You Can't Retire from Being Man

Being oneself is a vocation that never ends. You can't retire from being man, the spiritual reflection or activity of God, eternal divine Mind. At no point in spiritual being can activity or usefulness cease because now and forever the one Mind is expressing its intelligent concepts in the real you and me and everyone everywhere.

In human experience the time for retirement is generally associated with advancing years, with the false belief that decay is setting in with its attendant deterioration of mind and body. Christian Science reveals that a proper use of one's newfound leisure can arrest this tendency. Mrs. Eddy herself demonstrated this in a remarkable degree, and she tells us in Science and Health: "Except for the error of measuring and limiting all that is good and beautiful, man would enjoy more than threescore years and ten and still maintain his vigor, freshness, and promise. Man, governed by immortal Mind, is always beautiful and grand. Each succeeding year unfolds wisdom, beauty, and holiness." Science and Health, p. 246;

A famous concert pianist, still an active performer in his eighties, feels that he is a much better pianist now than when he was younger. His first fifty years were only a prelude. The thirty odd years that have followed have produced the mature artist. He sees life as a joyous miracle and feels that people sense this love of life in his music. Joy, gratitude, enthusiasm, love of excellence, have kept him young in outlook and physically able to maintain his demanding schedule.
