For four and a half months I...

For four and a half months I experienced daily tension, hourly crises, and constant inharmonious human relationships. My business necessitated traveling with a large group of strangers. Almost daily we were packing, unpacking, traveling, and working in unbearable heat and uncomfortable surroundings. Our group was inseparable. There was no free time. There was barely opportunity for my daily study of the Lesson-Sermon, given in the Christian Science Quarterly, let alone specific work on the growing hostility.

As I became burdened with the inharmony, one ear became heavy. As I became so filled with discord that I could not hear the Word of God, the ear filled up and kept draining. As the wall of self-pity and resentment built, I lost my hearing in that ear. Shortly I lost the hearing in the other ear. This condition lasted three weeks.

I was in a far Eastern country and to cable a practitioner for help was not feasible. Through circumstance so miraculous that it was obvious that God was leading me, one Wednesday I located a small group of Christian Scientists who met informally to hold services. The group was so small that the United States Embassy was unaware of it. This particular Wednesday the three people were meeting only to rehearse Sunday's hymns. A practitioner who spoke only French was there.
