WORDS OF CURRENT INTEREST
[The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly designated to be read in Christian Science churches on June 7, 1964.]
The goodness of the Lord (Ps. 33:5)
"Goodness" represents the deeply significant Hebrew word chesed, which is rendered in various different ways in the King James Version of the Old Testament. For example, in verses 18 and 22 of this same psalm it is translated "mercy." In other passages it is rendered "lovingkindness" or "kindness"; while further suggested renderings of this important word include "favor, love, loveliness, loyalty." In Psalm 33:5 and many other passages, the Revised Standard Version gives the translation "steadfast love."
