Mrs. Eddy has truly stated on page 548 of Science and Health, "Earth has little light or joy for mortals before Life is spiritually learned." This has certainly been my experience: we never really live until Life is spiritually discerned through divine revelation.

I did not come into Christian Science for a physical healing, but to try to satisfy a deep hungering and thirsting for the real meaning of life. As a child growing up, I could never understand why we were created to die. I used to spend hours with my Bible, searching for an answer. I often questioned the teachings of the Protestant Sunday School while I was seeking a satisfactory answer to my question.

In 1932 our only son was quite suddenly taken from us; and though up to this time I had paid little attention to Christian Science, in my great need I turned completely to the Bible and to Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy s other writings, which were my only source of comfort and support. I studied deeply her article "The New Birth" in "Miscellaneous Writings." which includes the assurance that "the spiritual sense of Life and its grand pursuits is of itself a bliss, healthgiving and joy-inspiring" (p. 19).
