WORDS OF CURRENT INTEREST
[The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly designated to be read in Christian Science churches on November 24 and on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1963.]
Every one that is called by my name (Isa. 43:7)
While this rendering gives a literal translation of the Hebrew, Moffatt prefers to paraphrase the thought as follows: "All whom I claim as mine." To enquire in his temple (Ps. 27:4)
An alternative translation of the verb here rendered "enquire" would be "consider" or "consider with pleasure." Some commentators hold, however, that at some time in the very early history of the Hebrew consonantal text a scribe mistook the form BBQR (in the morning) for the similar appearing form LBQR (to enquire). This would explain the translation offered by Briggs, "To gaze on the loveliness of Yahweh (in the morning) in his Temple." Worse liking than the children which are of your sort (Dan. 1:10)
