Christian Science heals, and...
Christian Science heals, and my heart sings paeans of praise and thanksgiving that I know this and have proved it many times. At one time I was healed of ptomaine poisoning. I had called a Christian Science practitioner early in the evening when the trouble first appeared, and the practitioner had said she would help me. But just before retiring I was so overwhelmed with pain that I was afraid to go to sleep; so I called her again. After several wonderful statements of truth, she closed our talk with the assurance, "Now you can go to sleep, for, remember, you rest in God."
That was my support throughout the night. As I lay down to rest, I pondered the definition of God given by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health. It reads as follows (p. 465 ): "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love."
While thinking of what this meant, I fell asleep. Sometime during the night I awakened in pain so great that the fear of death flashed through my thought. Almost before I could think, the word Life came into my mind with such strength and assurance that I was filled with peace and went to sleep again.
I awakened later with the same error demanding attention; but this time the word Truth came clearly over the clamor of the pain. Although I could think no more than just that word, the truths I knew of God's perfect creation and of His omnipotence were sufficiently part of my trust in Him so that again my body was free, and I fell asleep.
Once more the error awakened me, claiming power; but the word Love came flooding into consciousness, washing away the fear and the pain. The third time was the last. I slept until morning and awakened perfectly free. To me, the wonderful part of the healing has always been this: although the pain seemed great, the Word of Truth was there for me each time I awoke.
Consecrated study of the Bible, together with Science and Health, has resulted in solving whatever problems have come up. When I sought divine guidance to help me find a suitable place and activity, a happy marriage with a student of Christian Science came into my experience. Later when we were expecting a child, I did a great deal of study to gain a clear concept of the man of God's creating. I also had the help of a practitioner. When the time came for the child's arrival, the whole experience was harmonious.
I can never sufficiently express my gratitude for the support of my family and for the practitioners who have helped me during testing times. My gratitude for the fuller sense of God's nearness, a greater trust in His omnipotence, and my larger understanding of this truth that Mrs. Eddy has given us, much of which I have gained as the result of class instruction, cannot be expressed in words. My humble prayer is that I may become more worthy of the name Christian Scientist.— (Mrs.) Jean B. Burnett, Peoria, Arizona.
