When I was two years old, I had...
When I was two years old, I had pneumonia, which, according to the physician, left me with a weak chest. All through childhood I had chest colds and coughs in the winter. After my marriage, I had a severe attack of bronchitis, and the doctor said I was not using one lung and had not been using it for some time.
The lung condition persisted for many years. In 1945 my sister brought me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I began to read it. There certainly were many truths that I did not understand at the time, but others, such as God's ever-present love and the fact that He never sends evil or sickness, were just what I needed. The chapter on Prayer was very helpful.
When I had read two thirds of the book, I suddenly realized I was well and had been for several days. The healing has been permanent. I have never had another attack of bronchial or lung trouble. Catarrh, from which I had suffered, also disappeared. Since this healing, I have experienced many others.
While I was bending over one morning, something snapped in my back, and I found it difficult to straighten up. That day I could stand and walk a little, but it was painful to do so. The next morning I could not even stand. Then the help of a practitioner was enlisted and lovingly given. She affirmed my true selfhood as God's perfect child and declared that there are no accidents in God's kingdom. She encouraged me to rejoice.
The fourth day, while I was reading, these words from Science and Health stood out (p. 234 ): "Whatever inspires with wisdom, Truth, or Love—be it song, sermon, or Science—blesses the human family with crumbs of comfort from Christ's table, feeding the hungry and giving living waters to the thirsty." I then sang some hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal and was so uplifted in thought that I felt that I was healed. Later that day I took two steps, and the next day t was able to walk with complete freedom.
At another time I had had a constant headache for two days. The second night, I read a lecture published in The Christian Science Monitor, knowing there was some good in it for me. The thought that man is spiritual, not material, was so clearly expressed that I was healed while reading.
For protection while riding thousands of miles in cars, I am gratefill. One day when I was traveling to spend a holiday with friends, my thoughts were continually on God's protection and nearness. A few miles from our destination another car, while passing us, cut in and struck the front part of our car, ripping off the mudguard. The impact put our vehicle out of control. As it careened across the road, it almost tipped over. I called out, "God is Life," and I clearly realized God's presence. At that instant the car scraped the side of a tree and then righted itself. No one was injured.
I give thanks for all the good that Christian Science is doing throughout the world.—(Mrs.) Winifred I. Perrins, Maidstone, Kent, England.
