Christian Science is the most. . .

Christian Science is the most wonderful blessing that ever came into my life. When it was introduced to me. I had been suffering for three years from a nervous breakdown, and the doctors had failed to give me any hope. With the loving help of a practitioner and by much earnest study on my part, I was healed of this condition in three months. That was twenty-one years ago, and Christian Science has been my only physician ever since.

I used to think that if I were a Christian Scientist, I could just sit back and rest in harmony from then on. But I soon learned that Christian Science requires diligent watchfulness of thought, and Mrs. Eddy says in her Message to The Mother Church for 1900 (p. 2 ), "The song of Christian Science is, 'Work—work—work—watch and pray.'"

My experience in Christian Science has been an uphill climb all the way; but today I can say that I am grateful, for this climbing has made me study more and has brought me much spiritual growth. I have had many beautiful healings, some with the help of practitioners and others from my own application of the truth. One in particular stands out to me, which I should like to relate.

About seven years ago, while working in a factory, I had an infection in one of my eyes. After a few days it turned into blood poisoning. A practitioner was called, but for one week it continued to get worse.

A member of my family came to see me and wanted to call a doctor. I thanked her and told her that I was having Christian Science treatment. After she left, mortal thoughts came to me, asserting that Science had healed me many times, but that this time I would surely die. Finally I declared, "If I live or die, I shall still be a Christian Scientist."

With this thought, I dropped off to sleep. When I awoke, the swelling had gone down, and almost all the pain and discoloration had left. In two more days I was healed and went back to work. This proved to me that, as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 167 ), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized."

Last winter I had a healing of broken bones in my ankle and in one of my toes. The breaks were caused by a fall in my home. I was alone when it happened; so I had to crawl to the telephone and call a practitioner in another city. He lovingly assured me of God's ever-present help.

On Wednesday a little over a week later I spent all afternoon readingThe Christian Science Journal and rejoicing in the testimonies of the healings of others. Then I decided to attend the Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and to wear galoshes since I had been unable to get any shoes on.

After I had made this decision, I began to dress for church, all the while expressing gratitude. When I went to the kitchen to prepare supper, I was still rejoicing over all the healing testimonies I had just read. Suddenly I glanced at my feet and saw that I had put on my Sunday shoes. The swelling had gone, the bones were back in place, and I was healed.

This was another proof that "whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power" (ibid., p. 192). While I was expressing gratitude for the healings of others, I myself had been healed.

I am indeed grateful to God, from whom all blessings flow. My prayer is that I may be a better Christian Scientist.—(Mrs.) Hazel Hamm, Bloomington, Indiana
