REJOICING IN THE WILDERNESS

The Glossary in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy contains the metaphysical interpretation or spiritual sense of many Bible terms, and its study can be a source of much profit and enlightenment to every Bible student. For example, "wilderness" is interpreted thus (p. 597): "Loneliness; doubt; darkness. Spontaneity of thought and idea; the vestibule in which a material sense of things disappears, and spiritual sense unfolds the great facts of existence."

A wilderness, therefore, is not a stopping place. It is not a spot to linger in or fret about, but merely a place through which we may pass on our way to the promised land of spiritual understanding.

Every traveler Godward has his wilderness experiences, those periods when loneliness and doubt make the way ahead seem an impenetrable darkness, when faith in God's guidance falters and fear tempts him to turn back; but he who, undaunted, presses on faithfully, is inevitably recompensed. Looking back, he recognizes that these experiences have enabled him to grow in grace and understanding. But why was he not aware of this at the time, instead of afterwards?
