Through the understanding of...

Through the understanding of divine Love which I have gained in Christian Science I have been completely lifted out of some unpleasant experiences. At my place of business it took years for me to reach the point where hatred, envy, denunciation, and erroneous influences yielded to love, unselfishness, purity, and holiness. During this time I felt as though I were surrounded by a host of enemies, and yet I was neither unhappy nor discouraged. To all appearances it did not seem possible that I could continue in my rightful activity. I said to myself. Even though you have to stand alone, stand like a rock, for you possess, the greatest riches one can have, namely, the consciousness of the presence of God and His Christ as explained in Christian Science!

My basis was Christian Science. I applied the truth wherever I could. I knew that despite the cold and barren sense of the reverse of love which I was experiencing, I must, above all things, love. One day I had an opportunity to be of service to the one who had caused me the greatest difficulty. She was so astonished that I was returning good for evil that she was healed of the errors she had been expressing. From that day on we met as friends. "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Matt. 19:19). One blessing followed another, and harmony began to be the rule among my coworkers. Since then harmony has prevailed among those of us who work together.

I should also like to express my joy and gratitude for a more recent healing which was brought about through the study of Christian Science. On two occasions I suffered from a dangerous throat ailment. The throat was ulcerated and very sore. Not for a moment would I permit thoughts of fear or doubt to assail me during this time. I spoke to no one about the condition. Constantly I declared man's unity with God and God's allness, wherein sickness is unknown. The words on page 129 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, helped me more than anything else: "We must look deep into realism instead of accepting only the outward sense of things." I worked devoutly to replace physical sense with the spiritual sense of Life, to understand that there was nothing in reality which needed healing, but I must he conscious of God's presence. The strength with which these Godlike thoughts endowed me was wonderful. Despite the discordant condition, it was possible for me to continue my work uninterruptedly and even carry on my Sunday School activities.
