Christian Science is a thoroughly practical Science which can be applied to our every problem. This fact I realized at a very early age, due to the teaching received in a Christian Science Sunday School, and on innumerable occasions I was able to demonstrate the truth.

One question, however, presented itself to my thought at various times throughout the years: What if some so-called catastrophe befell me and there were no practitioner or other Scientist at hand to work for me? What if the pain were so great to material sense that it would prevent correct thinking on my part? Of what use would Christian Science be then?

These questions were answered completely, definitely, and finally out on the Pacific Ocean in 1945. The transport on which I was traveling took us across the equator. There were the usual initiation ceremonies to convert the many landlubber "polliwogs" to seagoing "shellbacks." In the course of the initiation the "polliwogs," who included me, were required to go through a "paddle line." Since no one particularly, appreciates physical violence of that sort, it is easy to understand why I ran as quickly as possible between the two lines.
