"Love is of God"

The ideal of love is binding on all Christians. There are no circumstances in which its authority is to be questioned or set aside.... Love ... is the deliberate resolve to seek God's purpose for our fellows in every situation. What that purpose is we know. It is that they and we should grow in the image of Christ.... Love bids us forgive not seven times, but seventy times seven. At no stage can we sit back and reflect that we have done all that love requires. Its demands increase according to the measure of our obedience. And it refuses to select its object on the basis of worthiness or mutual attraction. It makes the sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust....

But why should we love one another? What is the ground of our obligation? The answer is plain: Love is of God. It is the stuff of which life is made. It is God's own nature....
