Before taking up the study of...
Before taking up the study of Christian Science I was a very miserable person, much of my time being spent in sanatoriums and under doctors' care. I wished and prayed to be normal and free from pain. Although I knew the history of the Bible, I could not understand God.
In 1917 "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was brought into my home by my husband's mother. We lived in a small southern town where Christian Science was not known. Each morning she would read from Science and Health, and I asked her to read it aloud, which she was happy to do. Mrs. Eddy's definition of God satisfied me. I loved the thought of God as Principle, Love, Life, Mind, and the way in which Mrs. Eddy explains the oneness of Mind and man, God's idea.
About two years later I had boils all over my body, and the doctor said there was enough poison in my system to kill a dozen persons. I read Science and Health night and day. I could not sleep for the pain. The healing came very slowly, as I had to awaken from the delusions of material sense and take my stand for God. I finally realized we read Science and Health to understand God and not merely to be healed, and that, since God's work is done, the real man is forever perfect. I thought, "Father, Thy will be done." From that moment my healing began. Self-will, human outlining, and fear were healed also. This taught me the grand lesson that healing in Christian Science takes place when we realize God's allness, all-power, and ever-presence, and the consequent nothingness of matter.
