Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy,...

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us in Science and Health (p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." This was proved, benefiting all who witnessed it, when I was attacked by a physical ailment which was very painful and weakening. One day I found that it was difficult for me to swallow, and that my throat was very sore. I immediately worked to deny this false evidence. After a day or two, when the trouble seemed most tenacious. I asked for help from a Christian Science practitioner. Because I was so situated that I could not go to him or he come to me, absent treatment was given. For nearly a week I could not swallow even a drop of water, and I was too weak to take care of myself.

The friend with whom I live was doing war work, and so it was necessary to find a nurse to stay with me during the day. One came who, while not a Christian Scientist, was sympathetic to this Science. Fever and inflammation were destroyed, strength was regained, and I was healed. As soon as I could speak, although I was still confined to bed, I read the Lesson-Sermon aloud each day for my nurse and myself. At one time, as she afterward told me, the nurse was very fearful; then she realized that neither my friend nor I was, and it gave her confidence as she witnessed the healing take place. She has since written me that she later asked for help from a practitioner and was healed, and that now she reads the Lesson-Sermon each day.

During the days when the pain was severe there were times when I could not think clearly of any of the statements of truth in the Bible or in Mrs. Eddy's writings, but the words from her hymns came to me, and I kept repeating them over and over to myself, receiving comfort and help.
