Christian Science was first...
Christian Science was first brought to my notice through a clergyman and his wife. At that time I was fast developing into a semi-invalid, and had been in bed six weeks by the doctor's orders. I had strained myself internally, which added to my other troubles. Because a complete rest had not healed me, I was advised to spend three months in bed or have an examination by the doctors, but this I refused to do. My sister at this time went to stay with the wife of the senior canon of one of our cathedrals. The canon was a very broad-minded man, who was investigating Christian Science, and he felt, in the words of Gamaliel, "If this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: but if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it.'" His wife said to my sister, "I feel sure if your sister would try Christian Science she could be healed." When I was told of it, rather to my sister's surprise, I said I should be glad to try it, for it was not like an operation; it could do me no harm, and the healing must be good if done by prayer.
I went to see a practitioner and asked for help. I told her I had come on the advice of friends, but said, "If it is my faith which heals me, it will be no good, for I know nothing about Christian Science." The practitioner said: "It is quite sufficient that you have asked for help, but it is God who does the healing. I should like you to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which explains Christ Jesus' teaching so well that you will probably be able to do your own work." I read the textbook of Christian Science for a fortnight and received benefit, but on going to the practitioner I said I should be glad if she would give me further treatment. I was thankful to say I was better, but I was far from well. Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health, p. 420), "If students do not readily heal themselves, they should early call an experienced Christian Scientist to aid them." The practitioner lovingly helped me for a week, during which time I received my healing. This took place in 1909, and since then I have not had to have my breakfast in bed or to take medicine of any kind.
Words cannot express my gratitude to God for Christian Science and for all it is doing for me and for the whole world. The Bible and Science and Health do indeed meet all our needs.—(Miss) Drusilla M. Machen, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England.
