For many years I had been...
For many years I had been troubled with severe attacks of grippe, which necessitated frequent absences from my work. Hope and faith in doctors were fast disappearing, for I received no lasting help from them, but I continued to seek one who might help me.
In 1925, at a time when I felt the need of a better home, I was led in a most interesting way to rent a room in the home of a Christian Scientist. Though I knew practically nothing about Christian Science, I felt that it must be because of this religion that this home was so lovely and attractive. It was most refreshing to find a home where so much order, love, and beauty of thought was expressed.
Since childhood I had attended Sunday school and church, but after leaving my parents' home I rarely attended any church. At the invitation of my new friend I attended a Christian Science testimony meeting and a Sunday morning service. The simplicity of these services and the atmosphere of love and intelligence that filled the church impressed me deeply, and I felt that here was a church I needed. I began to attend the services regularly, eagerly, and soon purchased a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read it at every opportunity. After I had read it for a short time, its many references to the Bible caused me to investigate that Book, and in the light of Christian Science to glimpse the spiritual meanings of the Bible stories, which before had been of little more value to me than fairy tales. The textbook was for me indeed a "key" to the Scriptures.
