I desire to express gratitude for...

I desire to express gratitude for the presence of Mind which has been evident in my experience during the difficult years of readjustment, 1939 to 1942.

My professional activities were brought to a sudden cessation just before the outbreak of war in Europe. I came later to this country, where I have been provided with temporary home and activity.

When I first arrived in America to visit friends, I seemed outwardly to have overcome a sense of loss and unhappiness over affairs in my private life. Yet the trouble had not altogether been dissolved, for I found myself suffering from a burst appendix and peritonitis. The tenacity of material beliefs had me in such a cruel grip that I felt I could hold on no longer. Wonderful metaphysical work was being undertaken for me by a loving friend and practitioner, and it seemed that fresh courage was given me to trust anew. At one point the friend entered my room and, realizing the seriousness of the battle being waged, quietly sat down and prayed aloud the words of our Leader's hymn, "Christ My Refuge" (Poems by Mrs. Eddy, p. 12):
