It is with a deep sense of gratitude...
It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I write the testimony of my first healing in Christian Science. God does answer our prayers, as this healing proves. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p.1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."
I had suffered for over twenty years from hemorrhoids, and also from a recurrent abscess in the bowels. I had been in bed for nearly three months, unable to eat or sleep. After many treatments the doctors suggested an operation, although they said it might not be successful. One night I prayed to be healed. I believed God could heal me, and wondered why my prayer was not answered immediately. Some hours later I put my hand on a book next to my bed—it was the New Testament. I started to read of the miracles performed by Jesus, and then I read the message, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." A sense of peace came, and I fell asleep, the first restful sleep for months. When I awakened I thought, There are people called Christian Scientists who heal the sick. I did not know any Christian Scientists, but had heard of one who lived on the same road I did. I wrote a note asking her to come to see me, which she did. She kindly lent me Science and Health and recommended my getting help from a practitioner, which was done. When the practitioner came, I unburdened myself of many problems. She listened quietly and lovingly and then said: "Let go. You can be healed, and it will be a complete healing."
A few days later I found that my hands were tightly clenched and I was holding on to resentment and a sense of injustice. I suddenly realized what the practitioner had meant by the words, "Let go." I commenced then to let go those wrong thoughts, and one day I realized that I had been healed.
