In 1921 I first became interested in Christian Science
In 1921 I first became interested in Christian Science. I had a spell of inflammatory rheumatism, and my aunt lovingly told me about Christian Science and lent me her copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and also some Sentinels. I enjoyed reading the Sentinel very much, but thought Science and Health too deep to understand; so I read a little here and there and then sent it back to her. I kept on with the Sentinels because I thought them very interesting, but thought it impossible that they could help me physically. I was under the care of a physician and took his medicine faithfully, but received no benefit. After a while the medicine did not agree with me and I felt that I could no longer swallow it; so I told my husband to throw it away. I kept on reading all the Sentinels I could get, as they gave me a great sense of quiet and peace. In about six weeks I was healed, and in a few months I was able to do any work that was required of me, though at first I did not give Christian Science the full credit. I am very grateful for this healing, as it was expected that I would never entirely recover.
Later on I was healed of astigmatism while studying Christian Science to help a loved one. The oculist said I should always need to wear glasses. Most of this reading was done at night by the light of a kerosene lamp, which was supposed to be very hard on the eyes. My glasses became troublesome, and without realizing it I laid them aside and have never needed them since. That was over nine years ago. I have also been healed of stomach trouble, tonsillitis, colds, scalds, and burns. Undesirable traits of character are disappearing.
I am very grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her unselfish work for the benefit of all humanity, and to the practitioners who are always ready to help and comfort, also for membership in The Mother Church and a Christian Science Society. I thank God that I have been led to study this Science. I try to live so as to be worthy of the name "Christian Scientist."
