The Might of Right Thinking

The alert, public-spirited Christian Scientist strives to maintain a clear mental attitude on all questions that come before him as he reads the daily newspapers and listens to general conversation. In his careful perusal of daily news he realizes the necessity for noting, day by day, the passing events calling for right thinking relating to national and international situations. This wider sphere of mental work often speeds the solution of personal problems. Every individual student of Christian Science, setting apart some time daily for study and prayer in this connection, dwells with rejoicing on the ability of spiritual ideas to leaven human consciousness with justice, moral courage, mercy, which are among the foundation stones of universal peace.

On page 162 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" Mrs. Eddy writes, "A small group of wise thinkers is better than a wilderness of dullards and stronger than the might of empires." On this "small group," this minority of "wise thinkers," she places major responsibility. Though Christian Scientists may not, as a rule, be in the limelight of governmental positions, yet as metaphysicians all have their part to play. Many of those prominent in public affairs, though animated by right motives, seem apt to be swayed by conflicting human opinions, lulled by traditions, influenced by fear, confused by differing national standards, or moved by excessive and exclusive patriotism. The need is to realize but one Mind presiding at these conferences of world-wide import.

The reflection of Truth uncovers the evil methods of mortal mind and declares their futility. Where this so-called mind would rivet thought to questions of monetary and economic exchanges and induce poverty and obstructed circulation by shutting out the perception of real substance and infinite supply, Christian Scientists are realizing the power of Truth to lift human thought to the exchange of material standards for spiritual standards. The false claim of mental obscuration has no power to delay right national and international agreements, or to nullify the irresistible and unifying attraction of divine Mind. Not territorial gain, but the gain of spiritual understanding, is the need to which mankind is awakening, and which Christian Science is supplying. Wider true thinking, from the basis of divine Principle, inevitably calls forth ever wider and more beneficent results in the affairs of every nation; and the action of God's law of progress cannot be arrested.
