Signs of the Times
[Bishop William T. Manning, as quoted in the New York Times, New York]
The whole world is in a state of disquiet, even, I might say, of dismay. One thing is becoming clear to all of us: we must get back to the great fundamental realities of life. The most fundamental of all is, of course, religion—our relationship to God; the whole meaning of life and our attitude toward it depends on that.
The whole meaning of religion, moreover, depends on God—not theories or opinions about God, but God Himself. We must stop discussing the existence of God and kneel down in His presence. We need less argument about Jesus Christ and more acceptance and following of his beliefs.
