I wish to tell of a healing I had nine years ago, through the truth explained in Christian Science. My shoulder bones were broken in several places, and I was taken to a hospital. The head surgeon set the shoulder and placed me in a cast. He told my husband that it would be impossible for me ever to use my shoulder again, and that I should be slightly deformed, as it was such a very bad break; also that he had done the best he could for me. This information was kept from me. Two weeks later the doctor in daily attendance made the same remark to me, adding that I must be patient and reconciled to the situation.
Immediately upon his departure, I called a nurse and dictated a night message to a Christian Science practitioner in a distant city, asking for treatment. The result was that after a while I regained the complete use of shoulder and arm. Both the surgeon and the doctor who made these statements saw me using that arm as naturally as the other, and they could not understand it. The doctor asked permission to examine my shoulder, and as he looked he exclaimed: "It is wonderful. I do not understand it. It is as perfect as the other." I asked, "What did you expect?" He replied, "I expected it would be withered and that you would be deformed." I told him I was very grateful for what he had done for me up to his highest light, but that I had sought healing in Christian Science, and the truth had made me free. I thank God, and I thank Mrs. Eddy for showing us this wonderful truth by which we can be healed of all our troubles and diseases.
I should like to relate another healing in Christian Science. For a number of years I had been wearing glasses, as my eyes troubled me. Six years ago, while studying "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I read in the Glossary (p. 586) the definition of "eyes": "Spiritual discernment,—not material but mental. Jesus said, thinking of the outward vision, 'Having eyes, seeye not?' (Mark viii. 18.)" I read and reread these lines until the message became illuminated to me and I received its spiritual meaning; and the truth made me free. The result was I received normal sight, and left off my glasses; and I have no more use for them. Since then I have had other healings through reading Science and Health, and for the illumination which has come to me I am very grateful.—(Mrs.) Mary Isaphene Ives Brooke, Mt. Vernon, New York.
