Gratitude to Christian Science prompts me to relate the...
Gratitude to Christian Science prompts me to relate the following in regard to blessings I have received. A serious attack of inflammation of the kidneys held me in bondage from the autumn of 1926 until the late autumn of 1927. According to the doctor's opinion I was healed of this complaint in November, 1926; but the severe pains returned in a few weeks, and manifested themselves again and again at shorter intervals.
This condition continued until September, 1927, when, in order to rid myself of it, I again resorted to medical treatment. After ten days of observation and examinations the doctor told me that one kidney was very much diseased. He said that I might be healed by going to a health resort in the mountains for several months or by having the diseased kidney removed through an operation; however, he could not not guarantee that the former method would prove successful. Since I had already undergone three operations and had been obliged to spend about eight months in a hospital, I had not the slightest desire to undergo another operation.
In these dark days a bright light appeared in my life. In our great distress my wife wrote to a friend of the family who had been an adherent of Christian Science for many years. She sent me a few copies of the Herald and also lent me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I studied this literature eagerly, and was soon convinced that I could be healed through this teaching. I therefore asked a practitioner for help; and exactly one month after I had reported as ill, I was able to take up my work again. It had been expected that I should be absent four months. I never had to discontinue work again on this account, although pain was manifested intermittently for some time. It was a hard struggle and required much patience; but the practitioner always had a comforting word for me, and helped me over many a difficult hour. I gained new courage through the testimonies given in many of the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, and study of the chapter entitled "Christian Science Practice" in the textbook often brought me relief. After a long struggle Truth was finally victorious over error, good over evil.
