It was over twenty years ago that I first read the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This reading was prompted more by curiosity than anything else, and was more or less desultory to start with. I soon found myself using more and more of my spare time reading it on the trains and in my hotel room evenings, as I was traveling much of the time. During the preceding four of five years I had grown away from all religion and had formed anew the habit of drinking to excess at intervals which were becoming shorter and shorter. I earnestly desired to be free from the tobacco habit, which had held me in bondage for many years, will-power having failed to free me for more than a few weeks at a time.
As a result of reading the textbook with unprejudiced thought, I found myself that fall entirely free from both the tobacco and the liquor habit, and have been free ever since. These healings were accepted as signs given to prove that in Christian Science there had come to me the truth which makes free. Through the reading of the textbook I was attracted to the Bible, which was read from beginning to end no less than seven times, besides random reading and reading incident to the study of the Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons. The Bible had been to me a closed book, but in the light of Christian Science it became truly the Book of Life.
It is with a heart full of gratitude to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, that I bear witness now to the efficacy of this wonderful truth, which for over twenty years has met every need in our family, healing sickness and sorrow and bringing blessings untold. It has been our only resort in time of need, physical, mental, or financial. In it we have found a satisfactory and practical religion.
