It is a great privilege to have the opportunity of expressing my sincere gratitude for the teaching of Christian Science. It is the greatest and best thing that has come into my life. From childhood I was never well and strong, and when I grew into womanhood I could never reconcile the fact that God is Love to the fact that He sent sickness and suffering for some wise purpose to bring us nearer to Him. I belonged to an orthodox church and taught in the Sunday school, but what I knew of religion never satisfied me, for God always seemed so far off.
As the years went on I was still in bondage to sickness and was often very despondent and hopeless. I had congestion of the lungs and pleurisy, and had undergone two operations on my throat and a very serious one for appendicitis and peritonitis. The doctor eventually suggested that perhaps the dry climate of the Transvaal might benefit me. For a year or two I seemed better there; then one trouble after another came along, and I was again continually under medical care and underwent another very serious operation. To all my inquiries as to whether the operation was successful, I could never get a satisfactory reply.
At this point Christian Science was presented to me, but I had little confidence that it could heal me. I went to a practitioner, and she explained so simply and lovingly the beautiful truths of its teachings that I came away with a sense of peace and quietness I had not known before, having caught a glimpse of God's tender love and care for His children, and the fact that He sends only everything that is good. At the end of six weeks I threw away every kind of medicine, sleeping drafts, and patent foods. That was over thirteen years ago, and from that day to this Christian Science has been my only physician.
