In the article entitled "A Message to Humanity," in your issue of November 1, there appeared the statement, "Mrs. Eddy, in teaching that material ills exist only in the imagination, was preaching rank spiritualism."

In the first place let me say very definitely that Mrs. Eddy taught that material ills are in and of the carnal mind, and made manifest in bodily and material conditions; which is also what paul set forth in his saying, "For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace" (Rev. Ver.), and also what is taught in Proverbs, "Out of it [the heart] are the issues of life."

The word "spiritualism," if it is to be accepted in its popular sense, has no relation whatever to Christian Science. If the writer menat the recognition of spiritual reality, which the apostle described as having "the mind of the Spirit," then he is right. Christian Science holds that the spiritual understanding of life, having the Mind that was in Christ Jesus, will deliver us from the ills of human existence.
