I was fortunate enough to be interested in Christian Science...
I was fortunate enough to be interested in Christian Science at an age when I could attend the Sunday school for a few years, for there I obtained a good basis for future study. For years I had been subject to attacks of tonsillitis which usually kept me confined to the house for at least a week or two. Although I had been attending the Sunday school only about three weeks, I knew what to do when I awoke one night feeling one of these attacks coming on. I arose, took up the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and had read only a short time when I went back to sleep. In the morning I found myself perfectly free. This healing I attribute to the teaching of the Christian Science Sunday School.
About nine years ago I received a healing which was the cause of much astonishment among those who saw it. For several years I had had a large, unsightly goiter which seemed stubbornly to resist treatment, and I grew miserably unhappy and despondent over it. I was so affected by its appearance that for a time the family feared that I was losing my sanity. I finally yielded to the suggestion that I consult a noted surgeon about an operation, having heard that it would be a simple one and not dangerous. But after an examination he pronounced it to be a very serious case, saying that medicine was of no avail and that an operation could be undertaken only at great risk, and at my own insistence. He also forbade me to walk more than a short distance at a time. Due to my mental state my mother said nothing to me but quietly asked a Christian Science practitioner for help. This was so freely and lovingly given that in a short time the despondency and wretchedness were lifted like a cloud and I found myself so thoroughly and completely healed that except for the deep gratitude I shall ever feel for that mighty uplift, I can hardly think that such an experience was ever mine. The following year I enjoyed long walks, some of them ten or twelve miles in length and of a difficult nature, up and down sand hills and through dense woods, without even thinking of what the physician had said about walking. I have been married for five years, and we are blessed with a beautiful, healthy little son.
I am most thankful for these healings and for the many blessings that perhaps have seemed small at the time but have meant much in the everyday life; also for the overcoming of many fears, for the gradual disappearing of unlovely traits of character, and for the opportunity to serve in the great Cause of Christian Science.
