When I first heard of Christian Science I was a semi-invalid...
When I first heard of Christian Science I was a semi-invalid constantly under the doctor's care, usually visiting him two or three times a week. I had been in this condition for several years; just sick enough to feel disagreeable, but not enough of an invalid to give up business entirely. I was supposed to have an enlarged liver, malarial fever, decrepitude of the blood, and other ills.
When Christian Science was presented to me, I became interested in it from the first, gave up medicine, and endeavored in a blundering way to follow its teachings, as I then understood them. Physicians had told me that the climate in St. Louis was injurious to me, and I was considering the selling of my business and moving to a more congenial climate. From the time I gave up medicine and turned to Christian Science for aid I was benefited, and gradually became strong and robust. That was about thirty years ago. I do not remember to have taken a dose of medicine during this period.
One evening five years ago, while waiting for a street car, I was struck by the car. At the time, the car was running at perhaps more than thirty miles an hour. This was the testimony of witnesses. I was rendered unconscious and remained so for forty-eight hours. It was not then thought I would recover. My face, head, and entire body were badly bruised. One foot was crushed, and four of the toes were severed. A surgeon was called to dress the wound and shape up the foot. His work was continued as long as it was necessary to change the bandages; but during this period nothing but Christian Science treatment was used for healing. Now comes the wonderful part. During the time that I was confined to bed, and after I was able to be up and around, I experienced almost no pain from the wound. My face, head, and body healed rapidly. No scars from the wounds about my body are visible. I walked with the aid of crutches for a little over a year. Now I use a cane when going about. The loss of the four toes seems to make it necessary to have a little support of that nature on that side.
