Having received many blessings from reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...

Having received many blessings from reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and other writings by her hand; also for the exaltation received through the many other channels: the Monitor, Journal and Sentinel; the lectures, and the church services, The Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons, which she founded for the benefit of mankind; after partaking of these blessings and having heard the still, small voice of truth commanding me to stretch forth my hand and be whole, I write this testimony.

Some months before the United States entered the war, I had turned whole-heartedly to the study of Christian Science. When the Government called for men I enlisted in the army, and in a short time had joined the First American Expeditionary Force to France. Leaving New York in July aboard the passenger ship Philadelphia, we had an uneventful journey for seven days, at the end of which time we sighted the north coast of Ireland, which was the so-called danger zone. Then, as the news was spead of the sinking of a ship ahead, a great fear seemed to grip the ship's personnel. Detecting this sense of fear, I went to my cabin and read from Science and Health; and with the realization that God is good and that there is no place where God is not, the fear was overcome. As the realization came, I dropped into a quiet, peaceful rest, as a babe in its mother's arms.

I was soon awakened by the sound of cannon and went on deck to see the gunners fire at the disappearing submarine. I learned that the ship had been attacked at close quarters and that a torpedo had missed it by a few feet. To me this was added proof of the ever presence, operation, and perfection of God's changeless law; but to the captain and the other members of the ship it was a miracle.
