Scientific Healing

When the teachings of Christian Science are understood it becomes clear that if, and when, one's every thought becomes spiritual, his experience is bound to be continuously harmonious. The question, however, which puzzles the beginner is: How can the recognition of the perfect harmony of spiritual reality help him here and now when he seems so far removed from having his every thought in line with Spirit? To wait for healing until then is about as encouraging as the old belief that the kingdom of heaven is coming in the dim future. The records in the Bible and in Christian Science show that healing begins whenever one turns to the truth, and the beginner, by this simple process of turning to the truth, is often healed at once of some physical ailment even when mentally he is in the same state as Nicodemus was when he asked Jesus, "How can these things be?"

On page 61 of "Retrospection and Introspection" by Mary Baker Eddy, there is a passage which casts light on this point. "Christian Science declares that sickness is a belief, a latent fear, made manifest on the body in different forms of fear or disease. This fear is formed unconsciously in the silent thought, as when you awaken from sleep and feel ill, experiencing the effect of a fear whose existence you do not realize; but if you fall asleep, actually conscious of the truth of Christian Science,—namely, that man's harmony is no more to be invaded than the rhythm of the universe,—you cannot awake in fear or suffering of any sort."

In the case of the body humanity is satisfied that there is an evil power interfering with its harmonious government. This belief constitutes the fear in silent thought. In Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, on page 377 we read: "The cause of all so-called disease is mental, a mortal fear, a mistaken belief or conviction of the necessity and power of ill-health; also a fear that Mind is helpless to defend the life of man and incompetent to control it." A belief in the incompetence of God, divine Mind, is sin, and Paul says, "The wages of sin is death." Disease is thus seen to be just a lesser payment of these wages.
