I have testified frequently to individuals as to what Christian Science has done for me, but never in public or for publication. To very many of my friends my transformation is remarkable enough to have brought out the statement, from some of them many times, that no other testimony is necessary for them to be convinced of the efficacy of Christian Science than their observation and knowledge of my experience.
I had been for many years addicted to the liquor habit,—the periodical type,—and had been clever enough for a long time to keep the cause of my absences, on this account, from business and other respectable places, from the knowledge of everybody, except my most intimate friends and family, and even the latter I was often successful in deceiving. But at last my wits failed me, and it seemed to me that all my friends were finding me out.
In 1894 I tried the Keeley cure, with the result that for a period of little more than two years I used no liquor. Resolutions were frequently and honestly made, and I suppose I had the will power of the average person, but every now and then there would come over me a temptation which seemed irresistible, and a debauch would follow.
