Benefits Received from the Study of Science and Health
Since studying "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy, among other errors that have been destroyed is the fear of death, from which I suffered severely, it having come upon me at an early age. But I now have the assurance of eternal life, knowing that "Mind alone possesses all faculties, perception, and comprehension; and is not at the mercy of organization and decomposition" (Science and Health, p. 484).
The predisposition to catch cold has also been overcome. This error always found me an easy victim, often keeping me in bondage until the uttermost farthing was paid.
When coming from the West to live in this lovely semitropical state of Florida, as months passed on I became regularly subjected to malaria, rheumatism, headache, chills, fever, and sometimes dengue or break-bone fever. I was also fearful of catching the yellow fever, should the proper authorities announce the appearance of that dreaded germ. Preparation was always made in mind beforehand where I could be comfortably located in the pine woods, as I then believed, as many do now, that the aroma from these trees would protect from the disease by destroying the germ.
Since coming into Christian Science I am free from all these complaints and have been for about four years. I have escaped contagious diseases that have been going around in the community from time to time.
At first the old fears would present themselves, but by reading Science and Health for a while, trying to understand a I read, the fear was always destroyed, and I was well again. Seeing these results from the mere reading of a book proved this way to be more effectual by far than running after drugs and doctors. There was nothing distasteful in it, and my physician was always near. It is so economical that I wonder any one could ever question the price of Science and Health, and allow this to prevent them from obtaining it.
Although living in the same place as before having Science and Health, I find no ill effects from atmospheric changes or being exposed to the weather; yet these changes come and go the same as before; the fog is just as thick, and the rainy season comes just as often; but now there is no fear of any of these things.
Science and Health tells us, page 376: "It is latent belief in disease, as well as the fear of disease, which associates sickness with certain circumstances, and causes the two to appear conjoined, even as poetry and music are reproduced in union by human memory." I know this change has not been produced because I have become acclimated, for the same complaints are common among those who have lived here for years; yes, even those born and raised here. It was not climate but Truth that worked the change.
A physician I once talked with here thought that in order to avoid having these ailments, I should live in a house that had an upstairs, and should not stay here the whole year. But having lived in such a house before, and complained, I failed to see at the time the logic of his statement, and do yet, since it is not at all necessary for me to live North part of the year to keep well.
While I was always a great admirer of nature before I knew of Science, now I love her more. Her smiles seem to rest on this ancient city by the sea. Through the inconsistencies of Presbyterianism and materia medica, religion and doctors, and through all of mortal mind's ways and means, I was led to investigate Christian Science. I always enjoyed hearing it talked; those friends desiring to do so always finding me a willing listener. I always desired to understand, believing that since others had, I could. I did not come into Science through being healed. My growth has been slow compared with some others, but I never have doubted the teaching of Christian Science.
I had the privilege of class instruction last October from a loyal teacher of Christian Science. I am pressing on, trying to know more of the Truth. The Bible, which had been closed so far as making it a study went because of seeming contradictions, is now an open book, to be studied and enjoyed. I have found the Truth and I need not look farther, for I am satisfied, knowing that there is a Source from which to draw that which does resuscitate and sustain.—Etta M. Wisher, St. Augustine, Fla.
