The Upward Way

Dear Lord, throughout each active day,And in the quiet night,Thy presence and Thy peace divineAre as a shining light.

Morning Prayer

When in the morning hour of prayer I heed Thy voice,Fresh joy arises in my heart to meet the day,Joy born of daily proof of Thy sure powerTo lead me in right paths throughout my way.

The Goal

Humbly I pray to see Your way;Sometimes the road seems long,But always if I walk with YouAnd lift my voice in song,The sweetness of Your love is mineIn ever lovelier sense; The way grows brighter every step,The clouds not near so dense.

Not as an Hireling

Not as an hireling would I serve Thy will,O Love divine—as seeking a rewardFor work well done—thinking the power liesWithin myself to do or fail to do,To make wrong right or change the dark to light.

Be Still

Be calm, and hold your peace,Though winds of error throng;Uplift your heart to love,Your lips to song.

The Comforter

O Love divine, that in each hour of sadness,Comes with deep solace, bringing rest and peace,And to each heart gives promise sweet of gladness—Of joys untold, and love that will not cease.

Demonstration

I will not fear, nor cease my upward climb,Because some pilgrim toiling on aheadHas slipped and fallen by the way again,And weeps, despondent of the road we tread.

The Day Breaketh

Be not impatientThat the way seems dark,The path you tread so steep!Your God has set His markUpon each blade of grass,Each singing bird, each stone.

The Wine Press

Whither, we ask,Shall progress plant our feet?

The Anointed

In gentle firmness she unflinching stoodWhen God's voice called her to a godly work—Then moved in poised meekness, did not shirkThe task that Love had given, but stilled the broodOf evils in the encircling gloom with prayerAnd labor in an upper room.

Thy Will

I do not choose this way, I said,In which my race to run.
