A Prayer for Faith

Without Thee, God, are all endeavors vain;No joy, no satisfaction can be mineUntil Thy First Commandment I obey,And cleanse my heart, and place my hand in Thine.

My Aim

Not human praise—The shouts of men—Not exercise of pomp,Not thought of gain,Nor sense of self entailed.

Fulfillment

Well for that man who, day by day,With steadfastness pursues his questKeeping the narrow upward way,Obedient to one high behest.

Our Father-Mother

Oh, Father-Mother God!Oh, name so dear, so blest! On Thee alone I lean;In Thee alone I rest.

The Prodigal Son

I Took my earthly goods, and willfullyFar from my Father's house I straightway wentInto the land of sense; and there I spentMy energies, and no man gave to me.

Paul and Silas

How clear your vision; how serene your trust,Brave gospel messengers! Though basely served,Afflicted sore; in loathsome dungeon thrust;By cruel stocks confined—all undeserved—Yet, at black midnight's hour, united voiceUplifting gratefully, ye waited notThe moment of deliverance to rejoice.
