Eye on the world: An identity with undiminishable worth

In “Amid migrant crisis, Greeks rediscover a lost sense of self-worthThe Christian Science Monitor explains that Greece’s “economic turmoil” over the past several years, the refugee crisis, and poor relations with the EU have significantly challenged Greeks’ sense of identity. However, the refugee crisis has also spurred a “fury of activism” in humanitarian work that has, in turn, restored many Greeks’ sense of honor and identity.

Ideas on this subject:

From the Bible:

Thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord: that it may be well with thee.

Deuteronomy 6:18

The spirit of God hath made me.

Job 33:4

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Psalms 139:14

From the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:

Happiness consists in being and in doing good; only what God gives, and what we give ourselves and others through His tenure, confers happiness: conscious worth satisfies the hungry heart, and nothing else can.

Message to The Mother Church for 1902, p. 17

Identity is the reflection of Spirit, the reflection in multifarious forms of the living Principle, Love. Soul is the substance, Life, and intelligence of man, which is individualized, but not in matter.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 477

The divine Mind, not matter, creates all identities, and they are forms of Mind, the ideas of Spirit apparent only as Mind, never as mindless matter nor the so-called material senses.

Science and Health, p. 505

Referring to man: “He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas ... the conscious identity of being as found in Science, in which man is the reflection of God, or Mind, and therefore is eternal ... that which has not a single quality underived from Deity ….”

Science and Health, p. 475

In “Identity persists”: “One needs to establish a true sense of identity as God’s spiritual image…. under every circumstance one’s identity persists, untouched by material conditions.... One is forever himself; his identity persists eternally, the reflection of the one infinite individuality—immortal Mind.” And “God is revealing to those who are receptive the spiritual qualities which constitute real identity and is imbuing these individuals with the power to demonstrate health and joy and peace.”

In “What's your identity?”: “We may assume other identities in the course of our vocations, the causes we support, and the groups we align ourselves with—but these do not tell us who we truly are. Our true identity is spiritual and comes from God. Knowing this, we are better able to view and treat others as children of God. Identifying ourselves and others this way brings harmony to our relationships, and we experience the joy and peace of loving unselfishly.”
