Eye on the world: Stabilizing South Sudan
In “South Sudan: world’s youngest country marks a complex milestone” The Christian Science Monitor reports that South Sudan was created out of “sky-high hopes for a bright future” when it declared independence five years ago. However, the young country has been bridled by internal political conflict that turned to widespread violence. “Focused on fighting the opposition, the fledgling government’s attention and funds were diverted from properly being able to invest in national development.” Infrastructure, education, health, and social services were neglected. Drought and a punctured economy forced many to flee for refuge elsewhere. Now, with the violence earlier this month in South Sudan suggesting the return of a civil war, stabilizing measures are crucially needed to set the world’s newest country in a suitable direction.
