Prayer that moves
Elijah sat still under a tree
and prayed for the end.
I’ve been under that tree of despair
when all my hope’s been spent.
Elijah heard the angel say,
“Get up and eat”—
not “Uplift your weary thought,”
but “Get up and on your feet.”
After the stillness, the prophet’s prayer
needed to move.
He got up and walked forty days,
as he was led to do.
When I sit still, prepared to be led,
the angel speaks
of ways to pray a moving prayer,
a prayer that will set me free.
I sing my prayer to make it move
from head to heart.
Note by note, it reaches the place
where loving actions start.
I write my prayer to make it stick
throughout the day.
Word by word, my pen records
the truths that lead the way.
I walk my prayer to make it grow
from me to you.
Step by step, I clearly see
a wider world to include.
I live my prayer to prove its power
to heal the worst.
Moment by moment comes the call
to release the deepest hurt.
