A well-ordered life

A well-ordered life
keeping regret and surprise in check
ready at a moment’s notice
the trendiest clothes
the right friends
the perfect words at the opportune moment

yet curiously barren and detached
long on perspiration but
short on inspiration and authenticity
hungering for inclusion
meaning, fulfillment
(and hoping it’s not too late)

but then, in the twinkle
of a new-old idea
of a bold revelation
of the hesitant but inescapable
surrender of everything
I know and hold dear

returns the familiar light
the comfort of the Christ
the truth I’ve always known
tenderly enveloping me—
simply, naturally—
in God’s legitimacy and power

and with it the calm assurance that no matter
how perfectly I try to feather my nest
how much I prepare for every contingency
how long and far I might end up
straying from Him in whom
we live, move, and have our being

I will never be separated from divine Love
because I am spiritual, integral, free
imbued with a bounty, joy, and purpose
that my well-ordered life could never deliver
but that with God
is forever mine
