Should I even go on the mountain biking trip?
I’d never been mountain biking before, but I was really excited to try this new activity at a camp for teen Christian Scientists. The day before our biking trip, we were testing out our bikes to make sure they fitted us. We did this by riding around in a loop on a dirt road.
When it was my turn, I mistakenly used both brakes on the handlebars at the same time. This jerked me to an abrupt stop and I flew off the bike. I landed on my hands and knees on the dirt and gravel. Everyone ran over to help me up. I was embarrassed because while everyone else seemed to have figured out how to ride their bikes, I had made this stupid mistake of pressing both brakes.
A counselor helped me clean up, and she put band-aids on the scrapes on my hands and knees. She also shared some ideas I was familiar with from Christian Science Sunday School. We talked about how I’m the reflection of God, good, and since this means good is constant, I couldn’t be hurt. We also talked about the idea that I can’t be in a space where God isn’t because as Spirit, God is absolutely everywhere, filling all space. This also means that God always protects and cares for me.
