Uniting with The Mother Church—in name, purpose, and spirit

Originally published in a 1991 special edition Christian Science Sentinel “Church Manual”

The essential relationship between the Clerk's Office and members of The Mother Church worldwide has its basis in one straightforward statement in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science: “All applications for membership must be addressed to the Clerk of the Church" (Art. V, Sect. 5).

This By-Law places the Clerk in a position especially well suited for gaining a deep appreciation of how much it means to men, women, and young people—from many diverse cultural and social backgrounds around the globe—to unite with The Mother Church. There is such gratitude and joy expressed with the new applications. There are the firsthand accounts of lives regenerated, of healings and, yes, of sacrifices.
