God is at work
I have been so blessed in my career by leaning on God for direction and support; turning to God, praying, watching, working, listening, and receiving fresh ideas on how to proceed. As a result, issues I’ve experienced in the workplace have often been resolved, ending with a positive outcome.
Earlier in my career I started working for a retail company as a comanager of one store. I was informed that I might encounter some resistance from one of the assistant managers since I was being hired into the position she’d been working to obtain. When I first started working with her, I could tell the atmosphere was tense. She seemed aloof and uninterested in any work-related conversations, and when I entered an area she was in, she would either become quiet or sometimes even leave. Not only was this situation awkward for me, but as a manager who knew that the store’s success depended on a strong team of employees, I was worried that our team would be weakened.
As a student of Christian Science, I have been taught that man is the reflection of God. This person at work was not an exception to that idea, and I knew this concept was not only true for her, but for every individual I worked with, including myself. No one needed to feel he or she was pitted in competition with another, but rather we could feel the limitless harmony that comes from the one infinite God. Mary Baker Eddy wrote in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “Man is God’s reflection, needing no cultivation, but ever beautiful and complete” (p. 527). As God’s reflection, we did not have to “get” anything to feel complete. We already were complete. And if that was true, then our whole team could naturally be successful.
