Truth's appearing

Originally published in the September 2, 1889 issue of the Christian Science Series (Vol. 1, No. 9)

We must desire to have Righteousness or Good before we can become conscious possessors of it. Desire for a better condition precedes that condition. Truth does not come to the apprehension of men unless they first desire, seek for, and pursue it, but all who really desire the Truth may come into possession thereof.

That which is not worth seeking and asking for is valueless to any one; if some sacrifice is necessary to obtain any object of our desire, so much the more will the object, when obtained, be appreciated. If we hide the light of Truth under a bushel we cannot expect it to be seen of men. We may know that the light of Truth is there, but what avails it to others? We must show it to the people. The method of doing this calls for the exercise of the highest degree of Wisdom. The thought must be adapted to the hearer.

Were a mother, immediately after the birth of her babe, shown a child of two or three years of age as hers, she would at once declare that it was not hers. She must see it as the newly-born babe to be convinced that it is her own.
