The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science

Originally published in the 1939 pamphlet titled “A Prophet with Honor”

In "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 120), Mrs. Eddy says, "Those who look for me in person, or elsewhere than in my writings, lose me instead of find me." However, it is natural that those who have so marvelously benefited by her writings should love to hear of the human character of our revered Leader; and we who have had the unspeakable privilege of having seen and talked with her, love to recall how uplifting the experiences were, and share them with others. It is valuable to have even a slight knowledge of the way in which the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science established our Cause on a firm foundation, correcting where correction was needed, and never failing to encourage and inspire the workers, in every way proving her spiritual leadership.

Mrs. Eddy admonishes us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" that the "goal is never reached while we hate our neighbor or entertain a false estimate of anyone whom God has appointed to voice His Word" (p. 560). If we would share with our Leader the revelation that God gave to her, it is important that we understand the human footsteps which led to the present prosperity and stability of our Cause, and at least catch a glimpse of her true womanhood. Sometimes a healing has been delayed because of misunderstanding of our Leader's character, and often a great victory has been won through a sincere appreciation of her service to humanity.
