Safe steering with God

About a year ago I was driving home by myself from church on a two-lane highway at about 60 mph when the front left tire on my truck blew out. I immediately started praying: “God is with me. God is protecting me. I am surrounded by God.” I was trying to keep the truck on the road, but it was veering off to the left, and I crossed the highway and was headed straight for a telephone pole on a fence line.

I was turning the steering wheel as hard as I could and braking but was still heading directly for the pole. At the last second I loosened my grip on the wheel and became peaceful when the thought came to me that God was with me. I quickly came to a pretty comfortable stop, having missed the pole just by inches. The fence I had gone through had smashed the windshield, but no glass had fallen through. The truck was still running and the AC was still on. I was so grateful I started laughing and thanking God out loud.

A man who lived nearby came to my truck to help while his wife called 911. I got out of the truck to show him I was all right, and we both tried to reach my husband on our cellphones. A policeman, firefighters, and paramedics arrived. I said out loud to myself over and over that I was perfectly well. The wife of the man who had first come over to my truck was crying as she said that another vehicle had flipped over near this place, almost as if she couldn’t believe that I was OK. People were surprised the fence post hadn’t come through my windshield—fence wire lay stretched across my windshield, with the fence post lying on the middle of the driver’s side of my windshield.
