'Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse'
Christian Science has been such a blessing to our family in working out financial issues. Over the years, my husband and I have prayed diligently about finances, turning to the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy for inspiration. We have had some wonderful proofs that God is our true source of supply, and along the way we have learned many lessons about trusting Him to meet our needs.
Early in our marriage we struggled with financial issues. We frequently ran short of money and had a fair amount of debt, which caused us a lot of worry. I remember reading a helpful article in one of the Christian Science periodicals that pointed out how supply is in proportion to one’s gratitude. In the story about Christ Jesus multiplying the loaves and fishes to feed a crowd of 5,000, the Bible says, “And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven” (Mark 6:41). This reminded me not to look down at my checkbook balance or other limited resources, but to look up to God for abundant ideas.
I noticed that the Bible talked about the children of Israel dedicating to the Lord a tithe, or ten percent, of the harvest from their fields and flocks. I loved the idea of giving generously to support God’s work and express gratitude for all our blessings. One day I decided to write a check to church donating ten percent of our income. It was scary, but I felt so grateful for all that church had brought to our family. That night my husband came home and said, “Guess what—I got a raise today!” I thought it was interesting that this happened on the same day.
